RMP Electrical: Services

Outdoor & garden electrics

Garden power, outdoor sockets, lighting, hot tubs and garden-room supplies.

Outdoor electrical work requires more planning than indoor work. The environment is harsher, the regulations are stricter, and getting it wrong creates a safety risk rather than just an inconvenience. We carry out all types of outdoor and garden electrical installation to BS 7671 standards.

What outdoor circuits require

Every outdoor circuit must have RCD protection. Cable run outdoors or underground must be either armoured (SWA) or routed in conduit that protects it from physical damage. Fittings must carry an IP rating appropriate for their exposure.

IP ratings describe how well a fitting is sealed against dust and water. IP44 means the fitting is protected against splashing water from any direction. IP65 means it is dust-tight and protected against a direct jet of water. Garden fittings on an exposed wall should be IP65 as a minimum.

Garden room and outbuilding supplies

A garden room, summer house, or detached garage needs its own electrical supply run from the house consumer unit. We run SWA cable from the board, either through the loft and down the external wall or underground in a suitable trench at the required depth (typically 600mm under a garden, 450mm under a path, 750mm under a road).

At the outbuilding end, we fit a small consumer unit to serve the circuits in the garden room. This gives the structure its own protection and means you can isolate it independently. We include an earth electrode at the outbuilding end where required.

Ponds and water features

Water features have specific electrical requirements under BS 7671. All electrical equipment associated with a pond or fountain must be SELV (Separated Extra Low Voltage, typically 12V or 24V) unless it is positioned well outside the water zone. The transformer must be positioned correctly and protected appropriately. We specify and install pond electrics to the standard.

Part P and certification

All outdoor electrical work that involves a new circuit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. We self-certify and you receive a completion certificate as part of the installation. Underground cable runs are recorded on a plan so you know where the cable is before any future garden work.

Common questions

What cable is used for outdoor and underground runs?
Steel wire armoured (SWA) cable for any buried sections. Above-ground runs use outdoor-rated cable in suitable conduit. All outdoor circuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD.
How deep does buried cable need to go?
500mm in garden areas. 600mm under paths and driveways. We also use a mechanical protection layer over the cable and a warning tape above it at a shallower depth.
Can you supply power to a garden room or outbuilding?
Yes. We run a suitably rated SWA cable from your house consumer unit and fit a small consumer unit inside the outbuilding for local circuit protection. The supply is notifiable under Part P Building Regulations.
Do pond pumps and water features need special wiring?
Yes. Any circuit within 2.5 metres of a pond, pool, or water feature must use equipment rated for the zone and be protected by a 30mA RCD. We specify the correct IP-rated equipment for the installation.
Is outdoor electrical work covered by Part P?
Yes. New outdoor circuits and supplies to outbuildings are notifiable. We self-certify as registered competent persons, which is the legal equivalent of building control approval.

What people say

Trusted across the Thames Valley.

Came and installed outside sockets for me. Was a lovely guy, came on time and did a good job. The price was reasonable compared to some of the quotes I got from other companies. Would really recommend. Will call for work in the future as good tradespeople can be hard to find.
