Outdoor sockets

Weatherproof IP-rated outdoor sockets for gardens, patios, sheds, garden offices, and pre-wires for EV chargers. Properly RCD-protected, certified, and fitted to last.

Recent jobs

Adding a socket outside is one of those small jobs that quietly changes how you use a garden. Pressure washers, mowers, an extension lead for a summer party, fairy lights at Christmas, charging a power tool by the shed: none of it needs an extension lead running out of an open kitchen window once a proper outdoor socket is in place.

We fit weatherproof IP-rated outdoor sockets across West London, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire. Every install is on a 30 mA RCD, in cable that's rated for the route it takes, and finished with a certificate so it's documented for sale, insurance, or EICR.

What we install

  • Single and double IP66 weatherproof sockets, surface- or flush-mounted
  • Dedicated supplies to garden offices, sheds, summer houses and outbuildings
  • Pond, water-feature and irrigation power supplies
  • Patio and Christmas-light circuits, often switched from inside
  • Hot tub and garden-spa supplies (separate dedicated RCBO)
  • Outdoor USB-C charging points and switched fused spurs
  • EV-charger pre-wires and groundwork (we also fit the chargers: see our EV page)

How we do it properly

Outdoor electrics is the patch where bad work gets exposed fastest. Cheap fittings rust, undersized cable overheats, and missing RCD protection turns a wet socket into a real shock risk. The job is mostly about doing the boring bits right.

  • IP66 fittings rated for outdoor use: proper gland seals, no painted-over indoor accessories
  • Dedicated 30 mA RCD or RCBO at the consumer unit so the outside circuit can't take the whole house down
  • SWA armoured cable for buried runs, in the correct trench depth with warning tape above
  • Conduit (rigid or flexible) on exposed cable runs so nothing's clipped to brickwork bare
  • All terminations torqued, every accessory glanded, and the route documented for the certificate
  • Electrical Installation Certificate (or Minor Works) issued and Part P notification submitted

What it usually costs

Honest answer: it depends on the cable run. A wall-mounted IP66 socket fed from the nearest indoor socket on the other side of the wall is one job; a sub-board run to a garden office at the bottom of a 25-metre lawn is another.

As a rough guide, a single weatherproof outdoor socket fed from a nearby existing circuit is usually in the £180–£350 region. A new dedicated circuit to a shed or garden office, with armoured cable and a small sub-board at the far end, typically runs £500–£1,200 depending on cable length and groundwork. Common questions

What IP rating does an outdoor socket need?
IP44 is the minimum for a sheltered outdoor position, such as under a canopy. IP65 is correct for an exposed wall or position likely to be sprayed with water.
Does an outdoor socket need its own circuit?
Not always. A spur from an existing ring main is fine if the circuit has capacity and the socket is in a suitable location. For multiple sockets or high-load use, a dedicated circuit is the right approach.
Can I plug a hot tub into an outdoor socket?
No. Hot tubs require a dedicated circuit with appropriate RCD protection and a lockable isolation switch, not a standard socket outlet.
Can sockets be fitted to a fence or post?
Yes. We use weather-rated post-mounted enclosures with armoured cable run underground from the house.
Is fitting an outdoor socket notifiable?
Yes if it requires a new circuit. Adding a socket to an existing ring main in a non-regulated location may be self-certified by a registered electrician without a separate building control application.

What people say

Trusted across the Thames Valley.

Came and installed outside sockets for me. Was a lovely guy, came on time and did a good job. The price was reasonable compared to some of the quotes I got from other companies. Would really recommend. Will call for work in the future as good tradespeople can be hard to find.
