EV charger installation

Home and workplace EV charger installation, including OZEV-approved installs.

Home EV charging is now the standard way most electric vehicle owners top up. Public chargers are convenient for long journeys but impractical day to day. A home unit charges overnight and the car is always ready in the morning. We install 7kW single-phase units, which is the most common specification for domestic properties.

How we size the circuit

A 7kW charger runs on a 32A single-phase circuit. We assess the existing consumer unit to confirm there is a spare way and that the board can handle the additional load. If not, we will advise on a consumer unit upgrade at the same time. The charger is wired from a dedicated RCBO in the consumer unit, which means it has its own protection and a trip on the charger circuit does not affect the rest of the house.

For properties with three-phase supply (unusual in domestic settings but common in some commercial and rural properties), a 22kW three-phase unit is an option. We will confirm what supply you have before quoting.

Where the cable runs

Most installations run the cable from the consumer unit through the loft or void, down the internal wall of the garage or hallway, and out through a hole to where the charger is mounted. We use SWA (steel wire armoured) cable for any external runs. All holes are fire-stopped on the way through. The exact route depends on the property layout and we will walk it with you before starting.

LEVI and OZEV grants

The Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant (previously the OLEV grant) has been replaced by the LEVI (Low Emission Vehicles Infrastructure) scheme. Funding eligibility depends on the type of property and whether you are a homeowner or tenant. We will advise on current grant eligibility when you enquire. Grant rates and rules change, so we check current availability at the time of installation rather than quoting from outdated information.

How long the installation takes

Most home EV charger installations take between three and five hours. This includes the cable run, mounting the unit, connecting to the consumer unit, commissioning the charger, and testing. We work around the vehicle being parked if it needs to stay on the drive during the job.

Smart chargers and scheduling

Most modern home chargers can be set to charge during off-peak tariff hours, which significantly reduces the cost of running an electric vehicle. We advise on unit selection and can help set up scheduling if required. We supply and fit units from established manufacturers rather than unbranded imports.

Certification

EV charger installation is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. We are registered to self-certify, which means you receive a Building Regulations completion certificate as part of the job. The charger unit also needs to comply with BS 7671 18th edition wiring requirements. We test the installation before commissioning and confirm compliance in writing.

Common questions

What type of charger do most homes need?
A 7kW single-phase smart wallbox suits the majority of domestic installations. It fully charges most electric vehicles overnight from any state of charge and is compatible with time-of-use energy tariffs.
Does my consumer unit need upgrading first?
Only if the existing board has no room for a dedicated 32 to 40-amp circuit. We check this as part of the survey before booking the installation.
Is there a government grant available?
The LEVI Fund (Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) replaced the OZEV grant for most homeowners. Eligibility depends on property type and available off-street parking. We confirm eligibility at the time of quote.
How long does the installation take?
Three to four hours in most cases. Jobs requiring a longer cable run, ground works, or a consumer unit upgrade take longer.
Where does the charger get mounted?
On an external wall as close as possible to the parking space. Where parking is further from the house, we run armoured cable buried at the correct depth underground.

What people say

Trusted across the Thames Valley.

Came and installed outside sockets for me. Was a lovely guy, came on time and did a good job. The price was reasonable compared to some of the quotes I got from other companies. Would really recommend. Will call for work in the future as good tradespeople can be hard to find.
